The last leaf

The short story "The Last Leaf" includes love and friendship as one of its main topics. Sue and Johnsy are best friends in the truest sense of the word, and Sue adores Johnsy.

When Johnsy was ill, she tried to assist him morally and spiritually. Here are some quotes from the story: "Why, the doctor told me this morning that your chances of recovering quickly were - let's see exactly what he said - the chances were ten to one! Why, that's almost as good a chance as we have in New York when we ride on the street cars or walk past a new building.

This story teaches us that we should never lose hope in life quickly. It also teaches us the meaning of true friendship. Behrman sacrificed his own life so his friend wouldn't lose hope and recover from her illness.
